Blessings of Fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a very blessed month and we should strive to spend more time in prayer, reciting Quran, charity and doing good things during this month. We list out the main things that Muslims can and should strive to achieve during this blessed month:

1. Attain Taqwa

Allah SWT says: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for people before you so that you will (learn how to) attain Taqwa,” [Al-Baqarah, 2:183]. Attainment of Taqwa (Piety) is the foremost requirement in the life of a believer. One who has attained Taqwa has attained excellence in the worship of the Lord. It is beyond doubt that fasting stands as one of the sublime means in attaining it. In many verses of the Qur’an Allah SWT says that the reward of the people of Taqwa is Paradise. “Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord and for a garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth prepared for the Muttaqeen (people of Taqwa), [Al-Imran 3:133].

2. Seek Taubah

Making Taubah is a precursor to achieving Taqwa and what better time than the month of Ramadan to do this. The month of Ramadan provides a wonderful opportunity for accounting of ones’ sins and making repentance. Taubah is about reflecting on oneself and then taking note of the sins that one commits. As human beings, we are prone to making mistakes and it is incumbent upon us to repent for the mistakes that we commit. It should not become a ritualistic exercise but we should be sincere in our Taubah. In fact, the last few 10 days of Ramadan, when a lot of Muslims observe ‘Aetkaaf’ in the mosque, is one of the best times to reflect on ourselves and make Taubah.
Taubah is something that is between you and Allah SWT. Seeking Taubah is not only confined to Ramadhan, but is a continuous process. Allah SWT says: “Surely, Allah loves those people who constantly repent to Him (do Taubah to Him),” [Al-Baqarah 2:222]. One important point to take note of in this verse is that Allah SWT did not say: “Allah loves the Taa’ibeen (those who repent),” but he said ‘Tawwabeen’ which means “those who constantly, over and over, repent to Allah.”
The Messenger of Allah SWT said: “O mankind! Do Taubah (repent) to Allah and seek His forgiveness, for surely, I do so 100 times every single day.” [Saheeh Muslim]. In actuality Taubah is one of the purposes of our very creation as human beings. Human nature is submerged in sins. The month of Ramadan gives us a huge opportunity to do Taubah and draw ourselves close to Allah’s will.

3. Seek Forgiveness
None among us is perfect. We all have weaknesses and bound to indulge in wrongdoing. We commit sins out of ignorance or for fulfilment of desires and whims. Abu Hurairah narrated that Allah’s Messenger PBUH said: “Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain ALLAH’s rewards, and then all his past sins will be forgiven,” [Bukhari]. “Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan (and that is called Qiyam) faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain ALLAH’s rewards (not for exhibition), all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Bukhari]

4. Develop Relation with Quran

Recite Qur’an as much as you can

As this sublime truth, the glorious Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan. It deserves more attention and thoughtfulness during this month. We should strive to come closer to Quran and it’s message during this blessed month. It is beyond doubt that whoever develops a connect with the Quran will surely attain the goal of Ramadan (i.e. attainment of self-restraint, piety and noble conduct). Allah SWT says: “And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims),” [An-Nahl 16:89].

The days and nights of Ramadan should be spent in the recitation of the Qur’an and reflection on its meaning. The Prophet PBUH said: “Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Qur’an and humiliates others by it,” [Muslim].

Abdullah ibn `Amr reported that the Messenger of ALLAH PBUH said: “The fast and the Qur’an are two intercessors for the servant of ALLAH on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.’ The Qur’an will say: ‘I prevented him from asleep. Let me intercede for him.’ And their intercession will be accepted,” [Ahmad].

5. Strive to be amongst Siddeeqeen (true followers) and Shuhadaa (martyrs)

A man came to Prophet PBUH and said: “O Messenger of ALLAH PBUH, what if I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah SWT and that you are the messenger of Allah and I observe the five daily prayers, and I pay the Zakaah, and I fast and stand in prayer in Ramadan, then amongst whom shall I be? He PBUH said, Among Siddeeqeen and the Shuhadaa,” [Ibn Hibban].

6. Cut sexual desires

Fasting also helps in restricting ones’ desires. Alqama said: ‘’While I was walking with ‘Abdullah he said, “We were in the company of the Prophet and he said, ‘He who can afford to marry should marry, because it will help him refrain from looking at other women, and save his private parts from looking at other women, and save his private parts from committing illegal sexual relation; and he who cannot afford to marry is advised to fast, as fasting will diminish his sexual power,” [Bukhari].

May Allah bless us all and help us in achieving the true virtues of Ramadan. Aameen

WHAT IS COOPERATION & UNITY?

Human achievement is like a mountain range with cliffs, peaks, slopes and valleys. To aim for excellence in collective achievement is to aspire (aim) to climb to the crowning point. The effort requires each climber to be equipped with essential skills and knowledge and good amounts of determination and Will power. However, no climb should ever be undertaken without the most important piece of equipment: the safety rope of cooperation.

Cooperation ensures calmness, empowerment, easiness and enthusiasm. Cooperation provides the means for each climber to take a step, no matter how small, and for those steps collectively to reach the peak.

Today we fail to see the one unifying principle in the diversity of personalities. Our focus is always upon the differences. When we meet a person, our attention goes to the differences he has from you. At the physical level, we focus on what he is wearing or his physical structure. At the emotional level, you focus on his kindness or unkindness, his positive or negative tendencies. At the intellectual level, you focus on his ideas and ideologies. These things differ from person to person.

If you try to focus your attention upon some common factor in an individual, instantly affection springs forth. If you were to meet one of your countrymen in a strange and remotest town of a different country, what would be your feeling towards him? You feel a great sense of identification with that person. This is because of the common factor that both are from the same country & you identify with the common factors.

Focus on something that you can appreciate in the other person. Instantly you will feel the bond and affection. You have to find a common chord in everybody, even if he is your enemy. Since you are clouded with distinctions and differences at all the time, you are not able to focus on the common factors or something that you can appreciate in the other person.

When you shift your focus of attention upon the common factors, there is identification instantly and that brings unity.

What unites two sons of a father is that they have a common factor, their father. What binds students in a college is the fact that they are from the same institution. What unites the people of a country is that they have the country as the common factor. So, if you can overlook the differences and identify with some common factor, there is manifestation of affection instantly.

Imagine you are stranded alone in the deep rain forests of Amazon and you can only see wild animals around you. In that predicament, suppose you happen to meet your arch enemy, what would your attitude be towards that person? Do you maintain the same animosity there? You are able to forget all the negativity, all the enmity towards him and come together. What is it that removes the negativity in that terrible situation? It is the common denominator that both are in identical situation. Therefore, when you are able to locate the common denominator, there is affection, oneness and cooperation.

Suppose you are an Indian and you locate an Indian in the wilderness by chance. There is even more bondage because you are both Indians. After a few minutes of conversation, if you find that he is also from the same state and talks in the same language, there is even more affection. If he happens to hail from the same town or village as you are, there is more and more affection. Therefore, you have to learn to locate, even in your enemy, something that unites you both.

The ultimate common factor that we have been discussing all along is our own Self, spirit within which is the same in every being. Divinity is the core of all human beings. If we can attune to that inner awareness, that Self, that will be the ultimate harmony. If you cannot find that, find the other common factors. Where there is oneness, there is affection. Without that, the ego in you creeps up and there arises conflict. To develop this common oneness, you have to gain the knowledge of your own Self. Thus, make your mind equanimous in all circumstances.

Make one word upside down and see the difference yourself i.e. “ME” to “WE” – delete the word “I” from your dictionary and replace it with WE, the results will be enormous.

Some mistakes Muslimat do during Ramadan

Here are some mistakes women do in Ramdhan so try to avoid them:
*wasting the majority of her time in Ramadhan in kitchen preparing different kind of dishes to the family.
But the Muslimah should know that she has to exploit her time well in the Month of Mercy and not exaggerate in preparing food forgetting about the real purpose of fasting. After all, Ramadhan is not an eating contest but it is the Month of ‘Ibadah.
*giving up collecting Hasanat in the time of period : during menstruation, the Muslimah may become lazy and loses her enthusiasm to get closer to Allah in this blessed Month. But she must now that during her period, she may do a lot of ‘Ibadat (acts of worship) like : reciting Dhikr, preparing Suhur and Iftar for the entire family, giving sadaqah, increasing her Islamic knowledge by reading explanation of Qur’an, making Da’wah on the net…
*leaving fasting when menstruation ends minutes before Fajr time : if menstruation ends then the Muslimah has to make ghusl before the Adhan of Fajr so that she can go back to fasting Ramadhan but sometimes her period ends minutes before Fajr and when she doesn’t find time to do ghusl, she doesn’t fast that day; and this is wrong! Because she has to fast that day even if she makes ghusl after Fajr (but of course that day doesn’t count and she must fast it again after Ramadhan)
* wasting her time in watching TV : Ramadhan is a precious opportunity which comes once a year to get closer to Allah, it is a month of ‘Ibadah : for reciting Qur’an, praying Nawafil, praying Tarawih, performing night prayers, remembering Allah, etc… so she should not waste her time in watching TV especially if what she is watching doesn’t please Allah (movies, series, video clips…)
*going to pray Tarawih at the Masjid wearing ornamented ‘Ibaya and putting perfume : even though prophet Mohammad (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) said:“Any woman who has scented herself with bakhoor (incense), let her not attend ‘Ishaa’ prayers with us.”
*mixing with men after finishing Tarawih and going out from the Masid : which may cause Fitnah to men
The Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said to women on his way out of the mosque when he saw men and women mixing together on their way home:
“Give way (i.e., walk to the sides) as it is not appropriate for you to walk in the middle the road.’ Thereafter, women would walk so close to the wall that their dresses would get caught on it.” (Abu Dawood)
*wasting the last 10 days of Ramadhan in preparing for Eid: some Muslimat start to prepare for Eid in the last days of Ramadhan while these days are the most important and precious ones in the whole Month! Prophet Mohammad (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) used to strive hard (in worship) during the last ten days of Ramadaan in a way that he did not strive at any other times. So it is better for the Muslimah to prepare for Eid before Ramadhan.

May Allah guide us all to fast Ramadhan the way it pleases HIM, ameen ♥

Quran

One day, a rich father took his son on a trip. He wanted to show him how poor someone can be.
They spent time on the farm of a poor family. On the way home, father asked, Did you see how poor they are? What did you learn?
The son said.. We have a pool, they have rivers. We have lanterns at night, they have stars. We buy food, they grow theirs. We have walls to protect us, they have friends.
We have encyclopaedia, they have Qur'an. Then he added: Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.

LESSON: It's not about money that makes us rich, it's about simplicity and having ALLAH in our lives.
