This rare photograph captures Mahatma Gandhi being carried from Birla House after ending his five-day fast for communal harmony in New Delhi. The fast, undertaken from 13–18 January 1948, sought to restore peace between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in the aftermath of Partition.
Though physically frail after the fast, Mahatma Gandhi was unable to walk unaided and was carried before a gathering of supporters. Just twelve days later, on 30 January 1948, he was assassinated at the same location—Birla House—making this one of the final public moments of his life.
Restored and colorized.
